Laos 2012 Year of the Dragon Jade 2 Ounce Silver Coin

by YOTD

Released by the Government of Laos, this new silver coin struck to exact proof quality has been issued to celebrate the 5th animal in the Chinese Zodiac calendar, the Dragon! This is only the second coin in the prestigious Lunar series from Laos, and comes after the success of the 2011 Jade Rabbit Silver Proof. Standing out from other Lunar coins, this special silver coin is enhanced not only with selective Gold-plating, but also by the inclusion of a ring of genuine Burmese jade!

Jade Dragon 2oz Silver Proof

Inspired by the 12-year cycle of animals that make up the Chinese Zodiac Calendar, the Dragon is regarded as the most powerful signs, occupying the fifth position within the Zodiac. There are several stories about how the order of the 12 animals came to be. One of those stories tells of the Jade Emperor organising a swimming race between all animals, with the first twelve to make it across the river having a year named after them. The Dragon came in fifth position – despite being able to both fly and swim – on account of being helpful to some of the other animals trying to make it across.

Those born under in the years of the Dragon are said to be honest, free spirited, healthy, energetic, excitable, short-tempered and stubborn, as well as somewhat flamboyant – with big ideas, ornate gestures and extreme ambitions.

With this 2012 Jade Dragon Silver coin we see a representative combination of success and happiness, brought about through the Year of the Dragon, together with balance, healing and humanitarian qualities symbolic of the inclusion of the Jade. A captivating work of numismatic art, the reverse design of this silver Proof portrays a gold-plated profile of a dragon enclosed within a ring of genuine Burmese Jade – individually certified by the Gem Appraisal Center of Peking University in Beijing. Framed by two traditional Chinese dragons headlined by the character for 2012, this issue is fittingly housed within a red presentation case complete with a Certificate of Authenticity attesting to the tiny mintage of just 2,888 coins.

This stunning Year of the Dragon Jade and Silver coin is currently available for Pre-Order now at Euro Collections International, with delivery set for early September.

2000 Year of the Dragon Kilo Silver Proof Coin with Diamond Eyes

by YOTD

For the second edition in our series of retrospective posts, we’ll be highlighting the extremely beautiful 2000 Silver Kilo Coin with Diamond eyes. Again, it’s been sourced from an old Money Catalogue from Australian numismatic dealer, Downies. We’d have to say that this release is probably one of the most extravagant from the 2000 series – lets hope we see something similar released in the current series!

2000 Year Of The Dragon Silver Kilo Diamond Eyes

Sumptuous, opulent, lavish… words that are not ordinarily associated with coins. That is until you feast your eyes on the Year of the Dragon Kilo Coin. The use of colour is dramatic. The addition of yellow diamonds as the dragon’s eyes is pure genius. They emanate fire.

The inclusion of precious gems as feature elements of a coin design was a concept that took Europe by storm last year. It has been brought to Australia in this latest issue from the Perth Mint, adding a new dimension to the world’s largest coin.

The Year of the Dragon Kilo Coin presents the design of a powerful dragon licked by flames. It is struck to Specimen quality in pure .999 fine silver and is Australian legal tender with a denomination of $30. Each of these stunning coins

  • Features sparkling yellow diamonds that have been inserted into the dragon’s eyes
  • Hosts a richly coloured purple and yellow border of five bats and clouds on the reverse, synonymous with the blessings of longevity, integrity and leading a full life
  • Incorporates the Chinese character for the dragon, the lunar year 2000, the weight and purity of .999 fine silver in the reverse design
  • Carries the mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse
  • Is blessed with individual edge numbering, and each of these giant coins comes housed in a red velveteen presentation case with a serial numbered Certificate of Authenticity

This is a coin to enjoy. It is prestigious. It is also very exclusive with only 500 available to the Australian collector market.

The Year 2000 is also the Year of the Dragon – the symbolic representation of the New Year in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Year 2000 Australian Lunar Series of silver and gold coins from the Perth Mint will launch what will be a memorable year of celebration.

Those born in the Year of the Dragon are known for their powerful and majestic spirit. Confident and strong, the Dragon is dynamic, exciting and irresistible. With this in mind, the Perth Mint has created coins of power, with outstanding designs epitomising the Dragon’s indomitable spirit.

The Unquenchable Fire – The Golden Dragon

2000 Year of the Dragon Gold Colletion

$100 1oz Gold Proof

Incorporating traditional Chinese symbolism within a glorious modern design, the Year 2000 Australian Lunar Gold Series reveals all of the technical brilliance of the Perth Mint.

Each of the coins depicts a Chinese dragon design, set amongst clouds, gazing at a pearl. The clouds reflect good fortune, while the pearl is the highest symbol of purity – entirely apt for coins of pure gold from the precious metal specialists at the Perth Mint.

The worldwide popularity of the dragon motif will ensure unprecedented international demand for these stunning coins. Available as 1/20, 1/10, ¼ and One Ounce sizes, each of these coins is

  • Graced with a  superb design of the Year of the Dragon, with a Chinese character to signify its place in the Lunar Calendar, as well as the Millennium date 2000
  • Struck in .9999 fine gold to Specimen quality
  • Housed in a capsule, and is available encased as a set of four complete with a Certificate of Authenticity
  • Unique and eminently collectable.
